Start with the capacity plate on your transom — never exceed the maximum horsepower it lists. Within that limit, most hulls run best at 75 to 100 percent of the rating. Use this as a starting point, then call us with your make, model and length.
| Boat type & length | Typical HP | Yamaha series | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tender, dinghy or inflatable, under 12 ft | 2.5 – 9.9 HP | Portable | Light enough to lift on and off single-handed and to stow on deck. |
| Jon boat or skiff, 12 – 16 ft | 15 – 30 HP | Portable / Midrange | Gets a loaded hull on plane without overloading a light transom. |
| Aluminium fishing boat or pontoon, 16 – 20 ft | 40 – 90 HP | Midrange | Fuel-injected torque for heavy, high-drag pontoon hulls. |
| Bay boat or dual console, 18 – 22 ft | 90 – 150 HP | Midrange / In-Line 4 | The F115 and F150 are the volume sellers here for a reason — range and reliability. |
| Centre console, 22 – 26 ft | 150 – 300 HP, single or twin | In-Line 4 / Offshore V6 | Twin In-Line 4s give redundancy offshore; a single V6 saves weight and cost. |
| Offshore centre console, 26 ft and up | 300 – 450 HP, twin to quad | Offshore V6 & V8 XTO | XTO torque and integrated steering for heavy bluewater hulls running long distances. |
| Bass or tournament boat | 90 – 250 HP | V MAX SHO | Built for hole-shot and top end when you are racing other boats to the spot. |
| Shallow river, flats or rocky water | 40 – 150 HP | Jet Drive & High Thrust | Jet Drive removes the prop entirely; High Thrust pushes heavy displacement hulls. |
Still not sure? Send us your boat details or call (415) 448-6583 and we will spec it properly — including shaft length and prop pitch, which matter as much as horsepower.

About Boat Engine LLC
Marine Supply Store and Yamaha Outboard Dealer in New York
Boat sales, outboard motors for sale, certified service and parts
Looking for an outboard dealer who answers the phone and knows the engine you are calling about? That is what we built. Boat Engine LLC handles everything from boat sales and repowers to long-term support for Yamaha outboard owners across New York and the tri-state area.
Our marine supply store carries genuine OEM parts, lubricants, anodes and propellers for every outboard we sell, and our workshop runs on Yamaha Diagnostic System tooling with Pro Elite certified technicians. We also stock Mercury, Suzuki, Tohatsu, Honda and Torqeedo, and we install Seakeeper Ride — so one dealer can rig, service and upgrade the whole boat.
Need outboard supplies quickly, or a straight answer on which motor actually suits your hull? Call us. Our sales and service team works on honesty and turnaround time, not on upselling you into more horsepower than your transom wants.

No pressure and no mystery pricing. Four steps from first call to first run.
-
1
Tell us about the boat
Make, model, length and how you use the water. That is enough for us to work out the right horsepower band, shaft length and prop pitch — three things that matter as much as the badge on the cowling, and that online listings almost always leave you to guess at.
-
2
Get a complete quote
The figure covers the motor, rigging, controls and installation, so it is the figure you actually pay. If financing makes sense we lay out the options before you commit, not after. If a smaller motor suits your hull better, we will tell you that too.
-
3
Rigging and installation
Our Pro Elite technicians handle the fit — mounting height, steering, controls, gauges, and the sea trial that catches problems before you do. Every job is logged against the engine serial number in Yamaha's system, which is what keeps your warranty clean.
-
4
Service that stays with the engine
Yamaha specifies service every 100 running hours or annually. We keep your history on file and use genuine OEM parts and fluids throughout, so a warranty claim three years from now has the documentation standing behind it.

Tell Us About Your Boat, We'll Spec the Motor
Send your make, model, length and how you use the water. You will get a real recommendation from a certified technician — horsepower, shaft length and prop pitch — not a price list. Repower quotes include rigging, controls and installation, so the number you see is the number you pay.

Outboard Motor Guides & Resources
Maintenance guides and buying advice written by the technicians who work on these engines.
Best Two Stroke Outboard Oil: What to Use and Why It Matters
Choosing the best two stroke outboard oil is one of the highest-leverage maintenance decisions you make. The wrong oil leaves carbon deposits and shortens engine life; the right one protects performance for seasons.

Knowing how to winterize a two stroke outboard is the difference between a smooth spring launch and a repair bill. Follow the step-by-step process our technicians use on customer engines.

The two stroke versus four stroke outboard motors question comes down to your hull, your budget and how you use the water. We break down power, weight, fuel burn and maintenance honestly.

What outboard motors do you have for sale?
We stock the complete Yamaha outboard lineup from the 2.5 HP portable to the 450 HP V8 XTO, plus Mercury, Suzuki, Tohatsu, Honda and Torqeedo electric outboards. That covers four stroke, two stroke, propane and electric models. If a configuration is not on the floor — tiller or remote, short or long shaft — we will source it.
What does Yamaha Marine Service Pro Elite mean?
Pro Elite is the highest service credential Yamaha awards a dealer. It is earned through factory technician certification, investment in Yamaha diagnostic equipment, parts availability standards and customer satisfaction scores that are re-reviewed every year. In practice: your engine is worked on by technicians Yamaha trained and tested, using genuine parts and the Yamaha Diagnostic System.
How often does a Yamaha outboard need servicing?
Yamaha specifies service every 100 running hours or once a year, whichever comes first. Saltwater boats usually need more frequent attention to anodes, the cooling system and corrosion protection. Sticking to the factory schedule is also what keeps your warranty intact — book a service appointment when you are due.
Should I buy a two stroke or a four stroke outboard motor?
Four strokes are quieter, cleaner, more fuel efficient and need no oil mixing, which makes them right for most recreational boaters. Two strokes are lighter and make more power per pound, so they still win for racing, tournament fishing and weight-critical rigs. Our two stroke versus four stroke guide compares them properly.
Do you install Seakeeper Ride?
Yes. We keep Seakeeper Ride units in stock and our certified team fits them to most centre-console and outboard-powered boats. The system uses motion sensors and automated trim tabs adjusting up to 800 times per minute to remove porpoising, chine walking and roll.
Do you offer financing on outboard motors?
We offer competitive financing on new outboards and repowers. Call (415) 448-6583 or use our contact form and our sales team will walk you through the options and any current promotional rates.
How much horsepower do I need for my boat?
Start with the capacity plate on your transom — never exceed the maximum horsepower it lists. Within that limit most hulls run best at 75 to 100 percent of the rating, because an underpowered boat works harder, burns more fuel and struggles to plane with a load. Our horsepower sizing table gives you a starting point by boat type; call us with the make, model and length and we will spec shaft length and prop pitch too.
What is a repower, and is it worth it?
A repower means replacing the outboard on a boat you already own rather than replacing the boat. It usually pays off when the hull is sound but the engine is past economic repair — a modern four stroke cuts fuel burn, noise and maintenance against an older motor of the same horsepower. The decision turns on hull condition, what the boat is worth with a fresh motor, and whether the transom and rigging can take the new engine. Send us photos of the transom and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth doing.
Will servicing my outboard elsewhere void the warranty?
Your Yamaha warranty does not require that we do the work — but it does require that scheduled maintenance happens on time, to factory specification, with documentation. Missed or undocumented service is the most common reason a claim gets denied. As a Pro Elite dealer, every job we do is logged against your engine's serial number in Yamaha's system automatically.
